"He has shown promise and will get better with time," Ashish Nehra on Mayank Agarwal

Nehra feels Agarwal has learned a lot from the New Zealand tour.

Former Indian fast bowler Ashish Nehra believes that the opening batsman Mayank Agarwal must have learned a lot from his experience in the recent Test tour of New Zealand while expressing confidence that the Karnataka star will only get better and better with time and experience.

Nehra further noted that New Zealand is one of the most difficult places to bat given the pitches are conducive to seam bowling as well as there is a lot of movement on offer for the fast bowlers on the green decks, which makes it harder for the batsmen to succeed there, especially for the openers.

Agarwal has had a perfect start to his international career last year, but had a forgetful New Zealand tour, as the right-hander could manage only 102 runs in the two-match Test series and Nehra feels the opener will learn from his mistakes and bounce back.

Claiming that Mayank has shown promise as a batsman, former Indian pacer said he has come through the ranks and reckoned that the selector must give him time as he is still in the early days of his career.

Nehra said on Star Sports’ Cricket Connected: “It takes time and New Zealand is not an easy place. With my experience, for batters, the most difficult place on this planet when it comes to cricket-playing nations is New Zealand. New Zealand has always been tough, so Mayank Agarwal, I am sure he has learned a lot from the NZ tour. And it was not only for him, and for everyone, it was a challenge.”

The former pacer signed off by saying, “He has shown promise; there is no doubt about it. And it's early days in his career, you have to give everyone time.”
