‘Special talent’ Shubman Gill hungry to do well for India: Yuvraj Singh

The 20-year-old Gill has featured in only two ODIs so far.

Shubman Gill | AFPHe might be only 20 but Shubman Gill has already being touted as the next big thing in Indian cricket.

Recently, Rohit Sharma called him the “future” while Virat Kohli had earlier complimented the Punjab batsman, saying he wasn’t even 10 per cent of what Gill is when he was a teenager.

As if the praises from Indian skipper and his deputy were not enough, former India batsman Yuvraj Singh on Friday (July 31) termed Gill as a special talent.

Yuvraj also defended the youngster for showing dissent against an umpire during a Ranji Trophy game against Delhi last season.

“I was there at the ground during the match. He never abused anyone. He just questioned the decision. Sometimes batsmen do that. Look, he is young and hungry to do well. When I started playing, I too experienced such incidents. And if a player makes a mistake, he will rectify it. He is a special talent,” Yuvraj quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

The 2011 World Cup-winner was recently approached by Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) secretary Puneet Bali to be a mentor at Punjab’s 21-day off-season camp and he gladly accepted it.

Therefore, Yuvraj is getting to spend time with young Punjab cricketers like Gill, Anmolpreet Singh and Abhishek Sharma at the ground nowadays.

“I am enjoying this role a lot. I too had wonderful mentors when I began. Also, I appreciate the way PCA has pledged to raise the standards and provide the players with the best of facilities,” the former left-hander stated.

Yuvraj is also enjoying his golf in the meantime.

“Cricket and skating are two sports I have loved and played. Now that I have time at hand, I am learning golf too. And it is such an addictive sport. I am having a big swing at the golf range these days,” he said.
