Here’s why MS Dhoni won’t be a part of BCCI's training camp for Indian players

Dhoni has been out of competitive cricket for more than a year now.

MS Dhoni | AFPWhile the international cricket resumed with the England-West Indies Test series earlier this month, Team India are yet to hit the ground running with a proper camp in wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Before featuring in a competitive match, cricketers will have to regain an optimum level of fitness so that their bodies are ready to go through the grind of international cricket.

Therefore, the BCCI is mulling to organise a training camp for its top players in Ahmedabad under bio-secure environments in the lead up to the IPL 2020, which is expected to be held in UAE from late September to early November.

With this development, the speculations regarding veteran wicketkeeper-batsman MS Dhoni’s participation in the camp have already started.

Will Dhoni be a part of this training camp? The answer to which is no.

The camp will be reportedly held in Ahmedabad's Motera Stadium and it will be for the BCCI contracted players. Notably, Dhoni was not named in any of the categories when BCCI announced the central contract list for the 2020-21 season in January this year.

Therefore, his involvement in the camp, at least on the technical grounds, is not possible.

It has been more than a year since MS Dhoni last played any form of competitive cricket. The World Cup 2019 semi-final against New Zealand at Old Trafford was his last appearance in Team India colours.

The CSK skipper had begun training in the lead up to the IPL 2020, which was initially scheduled to start on March 29. After taking to the nets at Ranchi, he landed in Chennai in the first week of March and trained extensively with a few of his CSK teammates, including Suresh Raina and Ambati Rayudu.

However, Dhoni’s plans got jeopardized by the COVID-19 outbreak as the pandemic forced the BCCI to suspend the cash-rich event indefinitely.
