Ex-Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews chose India skipper Virat Kohli as the best batsman across format currently and the reason is his consistent performance with the bat.
The other options among which Mathews had to make a pick for the best batsman are Australia's Steve Smith, England's Joe Root, and New Zealand's Kane Williamson.

Mathews was on a video chat with Anis Sajan, mentor of the Delhi Bulls franchise in the Abu Dhabi T10 League, also the managing director of Danube Group, titled 'Cricket Unplugged with Anis Sajan.'
Naming Kohli the best batter across all formats, the Sri Lankan all-rounder said, "I would go with Virat. He is one of the most consistent guys after (Kumar) Sangakkara."
The 33-year-old got into a dilemma when he was asked to pick between his countrymate Lasith Malinga and India's Jasprit Bumrah as the best death bowler.
"I will pick Malinga for his experience but Bumrah is one of the best death bowlers going around these days," he said adding that Bumrah is outstanding currently.
