With Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) looking to address conflict of interest as an issue by expanding its new ethics code, former captains Misbah Ul Haq and Wasim Akram may have to give up one of their multiple roles in the system, within the national side, board or the Pakistan Super League (PSL).
The new 27-page code was approved at the last meeting of the PCB’s Board of Governors and is expected to cover every individual working in the set-up.
Misbah is head coach and chief selector of the national side but PCB's major bone of contention after the new code is him signing up as head coach of the Islamabad United franchise in the PSL also.
Legendary quick Wasim is member of the board’s cricket committee and also works with the Karachi Kings franchise. It is reported that he further has shares in a company which has been given digital rights by the board.
The ethics code will cover every business activities or interests of PCB officials, employees or members working in any capacity in the board or PSL either directly or through even family members.
"Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Ehsan Mani wanted a new ethics code as in recent years there have been numerous complaints and issues of multiple roles by its officials, employees or members leading to a conflict of interest situation in their respective roles," an official close to the development told PTI.
Bismah Maroof, the former women's team captain, is another individual under the radar. Maroof being a member of the cricket committee, head of the PCB's women's wing, and chief selector of the female side, will have to decide which role to leave or continue in after the implementation of the new regulation.
"All such people who are doing dual jobs/roles and there is an element of conflict of interest in their roles will have to now give up one or two of their roles," the official said.
The PCB has time and again faced criticism for allowing people to continue in multiple roles in Pakistan cricket. The board, having earlier pushed for the criminalisation of match-fixing, wants to now resurrect itself on this front also.
