Before the MS Dhoni-era, Team India struggled for long to fill in the wicketkeeper's slot. In the early 2000s, Rahul Dravid used to don the gloves in ODIs, which allowed the team to fine-tune the combination.

However, things changed as soon as Dhoni established himself in the national side. While the likes of Dinesh Karthik and Parthiv Patel debuted before him, they couldn't hold onto their spots for long.

Nonetheless, both Karthik and Parthiv Patel believe it is wrong to blame the Dhoni era for their short international career.

In a recent YouTube interaction with former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra, Parthiv spoke on similar lines and said: "Many people said to me that I was born in a wrong era and that it was Dhoni’s era but I have told it before also that I made my India debut before MS Dhoni. It will be wrong if I seek sympathy by saying that my career was shortened because of MS Dhoni’s presence. I think my performance was not up to the mark and that is why others got a chance."

He further pointed out, "Dinesh Karthik got it first and then MS Dhoni. If I was doing well then nobody could have replaced me. I will never seek that sympathy of not playing for long because I was born in Dhoni’s era."

Earlier, Karthik had said that he lost his place to a "special cricketer" and held himself responsible for his ouster from the Test team.

“I wasn't consistent enough. There was a highly competitive environment. MS Dhoni was breathing down my neck, who was causing a lot of stir in Test cricket at that point of time. He has gone on to become probably one of the greatest Test cricket captains India has ever produced. So, it's not that I lost out my place to some normal cricketer. He has been a special cricketer over a period of time and I respect him for that,” Karthik had admitted.
