It was on this day June 20, in 1996, when Indian team saw the debut of one of their finest captains in Sourav Ganguly, who took his first bow in Test cricket at the Lord’s ground in London.
Not only this, but he celebrated the special moment by slamming a brilliant century on his debut as well. On Saturday, the current BCCI chief remembered his Test debut and said: "Made my debut today...life's best moment."
Sourav's wife Dona Ganguly also shared a collage of his debut in Tests on her Twitter account.
Ganguly made 131 runs, becoming the 10th Indian batsman to score a century on Test debut and the first Indian to achieve the feat at Lord's. His debut, however, came 4 years after his ODI debut, which happened against the West Indies in 1992 in Australia. He made three runs in that match and was forgotten for four years.
‘Dada, nothing will happen at No. 5’ – former India coach’s advice that turned Ganguly’s ODI career
In May 1996, he made a return to the Indian set-up and was included in the team for the ODI played on May 26 against England in Manchester. He scored 46 runs in that match.
The 47-year-old played a total of 113 Tests and 311 ODIs for India in which he scored 7,212 and 11,363 runs respectively. Ganguly led India from 2000-2005, winning the ICC Champions Trophy in 2002, jointly with Sri Lanka and reaching the 2003 World Cup finals.
