The Asia Cup 2020, if the tournament happens, might be hosted by Sri Lanka instead of Pakistan, as the PCB offered to swap the rights with SLC if reports are to be believed.
"We had a discussion with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and they have already agreed to our hosting this edition due to the present world situation," Shammi Silva was quoted as saying by Sri Lankan media outlet ''Ceylon Today''.
Pakistan is rightful hosts of the tournament this year, but due to Coronavirus pandemic and India’s refusal to play in the country, the swap might happen. SLC will hand over the hosting rights of 2022 to Pakistan in return.
PCB won't agree on cancelling Asia Cup to accommodate IPL: Ehsan Mani
Sri Lanka has become Coronavirus safe with over 1800 cases, 1150 recoveries, and 11 deaths. The cricket board has also offered to host the IPL to BCCI given that the tally of COVID-19 tally in India neared the 300,000-mark with more than 8,500 deaths.
There is, however, substantial doubt if the tournament will go ahead as planned, largely due to the restrictions and logistical hurdles posed by the pandemic.
Sri Lanka last hosted the Asia Cup in 2010 and it was won by India, who are also the defending champions since the last two times, winning the tournament in 2016 in the T20 format and 2018 in the 50-over format.
On June 9, the Executive Board of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) met via a video conference and decided to take the final decision on Asia Cup 2020 in due course. On Thursday, India postponed their Sri Lanka tour citing travel restrictions owing to coronavirus pandemic. The Indian cricket team was slated to tour Sri Lanka later this month to play three ODIs and as many T20Is.
