"BCCI, NCA working out possibilities to organise national camp", says board treasurer

The Indian team hasn't been able to train together due to COVID-19 lockdown.

The team management would definitely need a camp before cricket's resumption | AFPResumption of training for country's leading cricketers after a lengthy COVID-19 hiatus is currently under review, said BCCI treasurer Arun Dhumal, as the board and the NCA staff are working collectively to organise a national camp in the near future.

Travelling is still not a safe bet across different states, as the number of positive cases in the nation near 2 lakh. In such circumstances, organising a bio-secure national camp at the NCA would be really difficult.

"The (resumption of) national camp is under review with the cricket operations team and NCA staff working out the possibility to have it as soon as possible. Different states are taking different measures (with regards to relaxation on lockdown), so we will take a call accordingly,” Dhumal told PTI.

From the previous phase of lockdown, running May 17 till 31, the MHA had allowed reopening of stadiums without crowd presence, which had helped BCCI coordinate with its state bodies to try and arrange for players' training at the local level.

"Everybody (players) comes from one or the other state. They can coordinate with their respective state association and train till the time it is safe for the entire team to get together," said Dhumal.

The board could take a cue from its counterparts in England and Australia and even if not a national camp, ask players to resume training in batches at grounds nearest to their current location.

Domestically, it has been a week since flight operations resumed in India. Dhumal said the board will first look at how players safety can be ensured before zeroing-in on any date for a national camp.

"The flights have just started. We will see the progress with regards to the flight situation and take them to a safe location where we are 100 percent sure of their safety then we can organise that. We are looking into that. (But) it is difficult to put a time frame to it."

In Mumbai, where Team India's captain and vice-captain, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both live, close to 40,000 positive cases have already been reported. Maharashtra falls under the most affected states with 67,755 infections till date. The state is under extended lockdown until at least June 30, albeit with few more relaxations.

"They (Kohli and Rohit) can be moved out to a safe location and from there they can join the camp as and when it happens. As I said, we are looking at all the options," said Dhumal.
