Facing Mushtaq Ahmed in one of many India-Pakistan ODI encounters in Sharjah in 1996, Rahul Dravid was sent back to the pavilion after an apparent nick that followed a massive appeal from the bowler and the rest of his teammates.
Recalling that game, former wicketkeeper batsman Rashid Latif says he told Dravid after the match that he hadn't actually edged the ball and had been given out wrongly.
"They played against us in Sharjah. Rahul, unfortunately, was caught behind. Mushtaq Ahmed bowled a delivery and made a huge appeal. We appealed alongside him, he was given out. After the match, Dravid asked 'was I out', and I said 'no, brother, Mushtaq tang karta hai bohot (It's Musthaq's habit to appeal)," Latif said on YouTube show 'Caught Behind'.
Latif also remembers how Dravid, being the "amazing person" he is, helped Pakistan's Younis Khan at his game.
"He's an amazing person. Younis Khan has also said that how Rahul guided him in his career and brought a change in his game. He has a great cricketing mind, was born to play cricket. He was born to play cricket. He has developed India A, and under U-19 team. He was born for cricket, it seems," he said.
Dravid, inarguably one of the finest to have batted at the highest level, played 164 Tests, 344 ODIs and 1 T20I for India and scored close to 25,000 international runs. He was also a successful captain for his country.
After his retirement in 2012, Dravid became coach of the India A & U-19 teams and continues to guide the youngsters in his new role as the head of National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore.
