Bhuvneshwar Kumar keen to reclaim his Test spot; understands difficulties in comeback

Johannesburg Test against South Africa in January 2018 was the last time Bhuvneshwar was seen in action in red-ball cricket. In fact, he was Player-of-the-Match in India’s historic 63-run victory in that Test.

"I definitely want to play Test cricket, but I know it won’t be easy to make a comeback, as everyone is doing very well,” Bhuvneshwar, who has been a regular feature in the limited-overs side, told Timesofindia.com.

"But I’ll try my best and will do everything I can to make a comeback in the Test format, as I think it is the toughest format and it gives a lot of satisfaction to perform well in that format,” he added.

The emergence of Jasprit Bumrah in addition to the brilliant performances from Mohammad Shami, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav has pushed Bhuvneshwar Kumar down in the pecking order as far as the longest format is concerned. Moreover, the injuries haven’t helped his case either.

Bhuvneshwar sustained a groin injury, which was later diagnosed as sports hernia, and had to miss the tour of New Zealand at the beginning of this year. He had to undergo surgery in London in January and then began his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) after returning to India and has been out of action since then.

However, he has regained his full fitness and is raring to go but all international cricket has been suspended since March due to COVID-19 pandemic.

"I have now fully recovered from the injury and am raring to go,” he said.

Asked if he is thinking about the T20 World Cup selection, Bhuvneshwar replied: "At this moment, I am not thinking about the World Cup selection, it is more important for things to get better and for everyone around us to be safe."
