WATCH: Babar Azam hits back at Tanvir Ahmed over 'improve your English’ remark

Tanvir advised Babar to improve his overall personality after the latter was appointed as Pakistan’s ODI captain last week.

Babar Azam | GettyPakistan Cricket Board (PCB) recently appointed Babar Azam as the captain of the ODI team and the ace batsman received congratulatory messages from the cricketing fraternity for his new role.

Likewise, former Pakistan bowler Tanvir Ahmed also congratulated Babar in a Youtube video. However, he ruined it all by suggesting the new ODI skipper to improve his English speaking skills.

Since Pakistani cricketers often get trolled for their poor English in the press conferences and presentation ceremonies, Tanvir advised Babar to improve his overall personality and learn English to deal with the issue.

“Babar Azam also needs to improve his English, which is necessary. Whenever someone becomes a captain, he has to talk during the toss and post-match presentation. Plus, he will also give interviews on various channels when he tours different countries,” he said.

Subsequently, Tanvir Ahmed – who played 5 Tests, 2 ODIs and 1 T20I for Pakistan – received flak on social media for his ill remarks.

In fact, Babar Azam himself responded to Tanvir’s comments and said: “I’m a cricketer, my job is to play cricket. I am not a ‘gora,’ who knows English completely.”

“Yes, I am working on it, but you learn these things over a period of time, you can’t just suddenly learn it,” he added.

Having made his international debut in 2015, Babar has come a long way. He is the No. 1 T20I batsman in ICC rankings currently, while his Test and ODI rankings are 5th and 3rd respectively.

In 26 Tests, the 25-year-old has scored 1850 runs at an average of 45.12 including 5 centuries. Azam averages 54.8 in the 50-over format with 3359 runs and 11 tons whereas he aggregated 1471 runs in T20Is at a strike-rate of 128.14 from 38 games.
