"New Zealand deserved to be joint-winner of World Cup 2019," says Gautam Gambhir

England won the World Cup 2019 because of boundary count rule after the final was tied.

England's first ODI World Cup win came after a long wait, and it still ended up being controversial. The English side didn't win by scoring more than the opposition or restricting them under their target in the tie-breaker, they won because of boundary count, something which is debatable.

ICC had to face the criticism for the rule and they made an immediate change, but the damage was already done for New Zealand cricket. If not for the boundary rule, England and New Zealand would have played another tie-breaker for the result.

Ex-cricketer Gautam Gambhir is among those who feel the trophy should have been shared with New Zealand instead of giving it to England alone.

“There should have been joint World Cup winners last time around. New Zealand should have gotten that tag of being world champions, but it was unfortunate,” Gambhir said on Star Sports’ show ‘Cricket Connected’.

This was New Zealand's second consecutive loss in a World Cup final. In 2015, Australia had defeated them at Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Gambhir feels the Kiwis deserve recognition for their good show in the major ICC tournament.

“If you see their overall record, they have been very consistent. For the last one World Cup, and the World Cup before that, they were the runners-up and they have been very consistent. I think they have been very competitive in every condition they have played. We don’t give them enough credit,” the cricketer-turned-politician said.
