India’s legendary captain MS Dhoni and his international future are one of the trending topics discussing among the cricket fraternity, experts, and fans for long.

The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman has not played for India since the World Cup 2019 semi-final defeat against New Zealand while his continuous absence from the national colors baffled many and even MSK Prasad's selection committee was criticized for their handling of Dhoni's future.

However, Dhoni’s long absence from the India squad and his exclusion from the BCCI’s latest central contract list has garnered a lot of speculation about his international retirement. Although, there are still no words about the same from neither Dhoni nor BCCI.

Well, recently, former chief selector Prasad broke his silence saying that Dhoni himself wanted some time off from the game and that’s why they moved on to Rishabh Pant and also backed him.

In an interview with Fancode, the 45-year-old said: “I am very very clear. I made it very very clear. We had a discussion and Mahi didn’t want to play for some time, so we moved on and then picked up Rishabh Pant and we’ve been backing him.”

Meanwhile, KL Rahul’s emergence as a wicketkeeper-batsman in the limited-overs format has made the situation a bit tricky for Dhoni, says Prasad.

He also felt that the IPL 2020 could’ve given a chance to Dhoni to show his prowess but now it becomes tough for him because the tournament was suspended due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Prasad signed off by saying, “Now, that KL also has done extremely well in limited-overs that he played in NZ, so, it would’ve been nice had this IPL held and we would’ve seen Mahi’s old glimpses back but now it’s a tricky situation.”
