Herschelle Gibbs to auction the bat he used in South Africa's historic run-chase to aid fight against COVID-19

Former South Africa cricketer Herschelle Gibbs has on Friday (May 1) joined the list of cricketers who have chipped in to raise funds for the Covid-19 relief efforts, as he has decided to auction his special bat to help his country in the fight against the global Coronavirus pandemic.

The former opening batsman will put up his bat with which he scored a match-winning 175 in the epic world record One-Day International chase against Australia in 2006 in the auction to aid fight against the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa.

Gibbs used the Gun & Moore sponsored bat 14 years ago to play a whirlwind knock of 175 runs off 111 balls to help South Africa to chase down the target of 435 runs – a world record in the ODI cricket history with a ball to spare against Australia at the Wanderers Stadium on March 12, 2006.

In his remarkable knock, Gibbs smashed 21 fours and seven sixes. The 46-year-old, who played 90 Tests, 248 ODIs and 23 T20 Internationals for South Africa, announced the same on Twitter.

Taking to the micro-blogging site on Friday, Gibbs announced, “Supersport showing the #438 game. The bat I used that day will be up for auction to raise funds for covid. Kept it all these years,”

His kind gesture towards noble cause amid the global crisis got plenty of support from fans and cricket fraternity alike on Twitter with most acknowledging his ‘brilliant’ gesture.
