"Its too early to say anything at the moment," says BCCI official on possibility of five-Test series Down Under

Cricket Australia is planning to ask BCCI to play an extra Test in the four-match series scheduled at the end of 2020.

Team India is scheduled to play a four-Test series in Australia after the T20 World Cup in the same country. Cricket Australia (CA) CEO, Kevin Roberts has expressed interest in adding another Test to the series and make it a five-game competition.

However, the BCCI is not keen to commit anything to CA at this point of time when the future of international cricket is so uncertain.

A BCCI official said, “It is too early to say if we will be keen to play five Tests in Australia at the end of the year. The current situation is a great teacher and we need to play it one ball at a time. Right now, the situation isn't right to even think about something that is seven or eight months away.

Who knows what the situation will be in October? Let us first see how things unfold and only then we can talk about these things. You don't really know if the travel directives will undergo further changes in the near future,” he added.

CA is currently facing a monetary crisis and is set to issue pay cuts in the contracted players’ salaries. If the India series doesn’t take place, they might lose another AUD 300 million which is a huge amount. Therefore, the Australian government might exempt the Indian team while all other international travel is suspended.

An ESPNCricInfo report read, “The governing body is understood to have received highly encouraging news about their outlook, at least as far as the lucrative India tour is concerned.
