MS Dhoni’s achievement as a cricketer is surreal, to say the least. In particular, he has etched his name in the history books as one of India’s finest leaders.
Dhoni is the only skipper in the history of cricket to have won all the three ICC trophies – 2007 World T20, 2011 Cricket World Cup and 2013 Champions Trophy. The veteran wicketkeeper has also led India to the pinnacle in Test cricket while he has captained Chennai Super Kings to three IPL titles and two Champions League trophies.
Lauding Dhoni’s leadership prowess, former England batsman Kevin Pietersen on Saturday (April 18) termed the former as arguably the greatest captain ever.
Speaking to Star Sports, Pietersen said it would be difficult to argue against Dhoni's greatness.
"It will be very difficult just with the weight of expectation to go against MS Dhoni because of what everybody expects from him, how he has to live his life and what he has been through captaining India and then captaining the CSK," he quoted.
Dhoni, who has been away from competitive cricket since India’s ouster from the World Cup 2019, was set to lead Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in this year’s IPL, in a bid to stake claim for a place in the national squad for T20 World Cup.
But now with the IPL 2020 being postponed indefinitely due to COVID-19 outbreak, his cricket future has once again become a major topic of discussion.
Earlier this year, India head coach Ravi Shastri had said the team management will wait and watch until IPL 2020 to take a call on Dhoni's comeback.
"It all depends on when he starts playing and how he is playing during the IPL," Shastri had told IANS. "What are the other people doing with the wicket-keeping gloves or what is the form of those players as opposed to Dhoni’s form. The IPL becomes a massive tournament because that could be the last tournament after which more or less your 15 is decided."
"There might be one player who might be there and thereabouts in case of an injury or whatever. But your team I would say would be known after the IPL. What I would say is rather than speculating of who is where, wait for the IPL to get over and then you are in a position to take a call on who are the best 17 in the country."
