India's fast bowler Mohammad Shami is trying to help out the daily wage workers in his hometown Amroha, Uttar Pradesh who are going back to their home amid COVID-19 pandemic. With complete lockdown in the country, the workers were left with no source of income which made their survival tough.

Some walked from Rajasthan to Bihar as transportation is inactive. Shami shared an incident that happened right in front of him. A worker was left unconscious because of hunger at his doorstep.

“He was coming from Rajasthan. Just imagine he is supposed to go to Bihar which is so far from Lucknow too. He has no means to commute and I saw in my home CCTV camera that he fainted in hunger and was close to my door. So I provided him with food and helped him out,” Shami said speaking with India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal on Instagram Live.

“I am trying to help as much as I can. There are migrant workers here who are really struggling to meet ends. The highway is also near my house so I can see people having a tough time. I feel I should help and I am doing as much as possible,” he added.

Shami also discussed how he is dealing with quarantine time. “I have learned to cook. I go and help my mother in the kitchen,” he said.

Chahal asked Shami to pick his favorite performance out of all, and the pacer said his Test debut against the West Indies in 2013 was the most memorable one. He had picked 9 wickets in the match with a fifer in second innings. “That was my favorite moment. It was at Eden Gardens in Kolkata,” he said.
