Sunil Gavaskar and Cheteshwar Pujara donate funds for COVID-19 fight

Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar and Test specialist Cheteshwar Pujara have on Tuesday (April 7) joined the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic, as the two made contributions to combat the ongoing health crisis caused by the deadly COVID-19 virus in the country.

Former captain Gavaskar has donated 59 lakhs towards the COVID-19 relief fund – 35 lakh to PM-Cares Funds and 24 lakhs to Maharashtra Government, while Pujara made an unspecified contribution to the CARES fund and Gujarat CM Relief Fund for battling COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of COVID-19 positive cases have been rapidly rising in the country, as the figures are near to cross the 5000-mark in India with 131 dead till now while the deadly virus has killed over 70000 people and infected around 14 Lakhs globally so far.

Meanwhile, Gavaskar, who is a cricket commentator and analyst of the game, did not reveal the contribution himself but former Mumbai skipper Amol Mujumdar revealed the same on Twitter.

Mujumdar said: “Just heard that SMG has donated 59 lakhs towards covid relief fund. 35 to @PMCaresFunds n 24 lakhs to @CMOMaharashtra. Thumbs up superb gesture Sir.”

On the other hand, Pujara thanked all the front-line warriors including doctors, paramedical staff, and police for their selfless service during this difficult time while announcing the contribution.

The Indian batsman said: “My family & I have contributed our bit to the-CARES Fund and the Gujarat CM Relief Fund, and hope that you will too. Every single contribution counts, so let us all do our bit and together we will certainly overcome.”

Pujara signed off by saying, “We would like to convey our deepest gratitude to all the front line warriors - medical professionals, policemen/women, grocery staff, and so many others - for their dedication, courage, and sacrifices in serving our nation and humanity.”
