Sourav Ganguly visits Belur Math after 25 years to donate 2000 kg of rice amid COVID-19 lockdown

The BCCI President had recently pledged to provide free rice worth Rs 50 lakh.

Amid the countrywide lockdown due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in India, BCCI President and former India captain Sourav Ganguly visited Belur Math, the global headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission, to fulfill his promise on Wednesday (April 1).

The legendary cricketer had pledged to provide rice worth Rs 50 lakh last week and he has finally handed over 2000kgs of rice at the Belur Math for the needy to help in the fight the COVID-19 pandemic.

Taking to Twitter on Wednesday, Ganguly has confirmed the same while sharing the number of pictures from the visit on his social media handle. He wrote: “Visited Belur math after 25 years .. handed over 2000kgs of rice for the needy.”

Meanwhile, the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) has also shared a video of BCCI president at the Belur Math and thanked the former CAB president for his humanitarian gesture.

The CAB said in a statement: “It is heartening to note that Sourav Ganguly along with Lal Baba Rice has come forward to provide free rice worth Rs 50 lakh to the needy people who have been put in government schools for safety and security.”

The state body also hoped that the initiative by Ganguly would encourage others to contribute in this crisis to help the needy people. The stamen further reads: “Hope this initiative of Ganguly would encourage other citizens of the state to take up similar initiatives to serve the people of our state.”

Noteworthy, the number of cases in India jumped to 1,637 with 38 deaths while the deadly virus infected over 8,00,000 people besides claiming over 42000 lives globally so far.
