Suresh Raina donates Rs 52 lakh to help India fight COVID-19 outbreak 

The deadly virus has had a global affect since originating in China in December last year.

Suresh Raina | GettyIndia batsman Suresh Raina donated a sum of Rs 52 lakhs towards the government's relief fund to help continue the nation's fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Raina, whose contribution is biggest among Indian sportspersons across disciplines so far, also urged others to do their bit as the country deals with a massive health crisis.

“It’s time we all do our bit to help defeat COVID19. I’m pledging Rs 52 lakh for the fight against Corona Rs 31 lakh to the PM-CARES Fund & ₹21 lakh to the UP CM’s Disaster Relief Fund). Please do your bit too. Jai Hind," tweeted the 33-year-old, who has played 18 Tests, 226 ODIs and 78 T20Is for India.

Raina was due to turn up for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) but the tournament got postponed until at least April 15 because of the potential threat of Coronavirus spread, which could further ruin the competition this year. 

Globally, 28,000 deaths have been reported so far because of the virus that originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year. 

In India, the death toll has reached 21. 

Given the huge population here, PM Narendra Modi last week announced a 21-day lockdown for the country to best tackle the outbreak.
