Former England captain Sir Alastair Cook believes that the scheduled English County Championship should be canceled if the season cannot be played in full due to the global Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

With the COVID-19 outbreak has taken a huge toll on sporting events all around the world, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) have also postponed all cricketing action until at least May 28 because of the pandemic which has now claimed over 25000 lives globally.

The County Championship was due to begin on April 12 and will now face a lengthy delay after ECB CEO Tom Harrison said that the “most financially important forms of the game” will be prioritized – which means Twenty20 Blast and the inaugural season of The Hundred are the most likely competitions in England to be retained in a slimmed-down schedule.

Well, Cook, who won the Division One title with Essex last season, on Saturday (March 28), made clear his stance regarding the same, as Cook suggested canceling the County Championship will be the best option in this situation, as a shortened season would lose its value.

Cook told the BBC: “In this year, over the next six months, the bigger picture is the most important. Whatever happens, if we do play any sort of cricket, which hopefully we will, what I hope is that they don’t try and have a six-game County Championship or something like that.”

He signed off by saying: “I would rather have one or two full tournaments because if you do then play that tournament or two tournaments it is so much more rewarding to win it. If there are no time for a meaningful County Championship, say (you can only play) three or four games, there is probably not much sense us having it.”
