Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer’s response to the booing England crowd was recorded and can be seen in Amazon Prime Video’s ‘The Test’.

The then Australian skipper Steve Smith and his deputy David Warner were banned along with Cameron Bancroft for being involved in the Sandpaper Gate. On their return to Test cricket in July 2019 in the Ashes series in England, the home crowd was pretty hostile towards them and booed them every time they entered the ground.

This did not go down well with the Australian coach Justin Langer and the mentor for the Ashes series and former captain Ricky Ponting. The latter felt like jumping into the crowd and shutting them up.

Ponting said, “At different times, probably both of us (he and Langer) had to hold each other back from not jumping over the fence and getting amongst the crowd and shutting a few of them to be honest.”

Justin Langer was also angry with the crowd and went on to say that the people in the crowd who were booing the duo for their mistakes had also made mistakes in their life. He also termed the crowd’s behavior as ignorant.

Langer said, “I hated it. I think it is ignorant. I think it's disrespectful. It made me really angry to start off. Everyone booing Smith and Warner out there has done mistakes in their lives, he said. What the crowd is doing is a reflection of them and not Warner and Smith's.”

Steve Smith seemed to be more determined with the booing as he recorded a whopping total of 774 runs in 4 matches at an average of 110.57.
