Australia’s Steve Smith played his first match in South Africa after serving his ban for the ball-tampering scandal at Cape Town in March 2018. Though Smith might have expected boos from the South African fans, they were not as brutal as he might have expected.
But still there were few fans who were ready with their placards and were just waiting for an opportunity to get back at the Aussie and they all got that opportunity in Dale Steyn’s over when Smith tried to get a boundary off a delivery that bounced twice before reaching the bat.
The right-hander advanced down the track and managed to get bat on the ball and found the gap to get a boundary even though the ball bounced a couple of times before reaching him. But the umpire ruled it a dead-ball due to Steyn having released the ball unintentionally after clipping his head midway through his bowling action.
As soon as the umpire signaled dead ball, all the fans started booing the former skipper who was caught reacting with a shoulder shrug after the umpire's decision. Some of them started showing their placards.
“Sandpaper for sale. Pocket-sized for extra discreetness,” read one of those signs.
Even though Smith top-scored with 45 runs to his name off 32 deliveries, Ashton Agar stole the show with his fifer which also included a hat-trick as Australia won the match easily by 107 runs.
