Ganguly avoids query over MS Dhoni's omission from central contract list

The former India captain hasn't played since the World Cup in UK last year.

MS Dhoni | GettyBCCI president Sourav Ganguly refused to comment on MS Dhoni's omission from India's central contracts list for the season 2019-20.

Dhoni hasn't played for India post the World Cup in UK in July last year, since when there have been widespread speculations over his future at the highest level.

"I can't comment on this," PTI quoted Ganguly as saying on Dhoni, who has begun training with the Jharkhand Ranji Trophy team and is expected to return to the field for Chennai Super Kings during the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League.

Dhoni walked off in pain at his run-out by Martin Guptill in the World Cup semi-final loss to New Zealand at Old Trafford and it felt at the time that this it for the legendary cricketer and he'll be hanging his boots soon.

However, with no official announcement either way, there have been queries over his future for the team management as well as the selectors. While Ganguly didn't respond to the question, chief selector MSK Prasad and skipper Virat Kohli, head coach Ravi Shastri have been giving contrary opinions on Dhoni.

Prasad made it clear that the selection committee is moving on to other young options like Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson but Kohli and Shastri aren't ruling out the possibility of Dhoni's comeback especially with the T20 World Cup in Australia scheduled in October and they'll be focussing on his fitness and performance while playing for CSK during the IPL.
