West Indies-Ireland series to have third umpire monitoring no-balls

The method is being trialled by the ICC with the vision of improving no-ball call accuracy.

The ICC wants to improve the no-ball call accuracy | GettyThird umpire will be monitoring and calling all front-foot no-balls during Ireland's limited-overs series in the West Indies this month; the trial will be carried out in both the three-match ODI and T20I series on the tour, beginning January 7.

“The third umpire will monitor each ball for any front foot infringement and communicate it to the on-field umpire to call a no ball," the ICC said in a statement on Monday (January 6).

The on-field umpire will carry forward the front-foot no-ball call only after instructions from the officiating third umpire.

Tried for the very first time during a 2016 limited-overs series between England and Pakistan, the method was recently also used when the West Indies toured India for three T20Is and as many ODIs.

The ICC wants to trial the method in more international games so as to figure out whether the accuracy of calling no-balls improve with time and "whether it can be implemented while minimizing disruption to the flow of the game."
