MS Dhoni's retirement speculations have been doing the rounds ever since India’s ouster from World Cup 2019 in July.

Following the quadrennial event, the veteran wicketkeeper took a sabbatical from international cricket to train with the Territorial Army – 106 TA Battalion (Para) in Jammu and Kashmir for two weeks, which saw him miss the tour of the Caribbean.

Dhoni then skipped white-ball series against South Africa, Bangladesh and he is not featuring in the ongoing ODIs and T20Is against West Indies as well.

Amid the hue and cry, BCCI chief selector MSK Prasad on Friday (December 13) said that the decision to call time on his illustrious international career is Dhoni's own.

“The panel members, if we take away our professional responsibilities, are as big a fan of Dhoni as anyone. He has achieved everything under the sun, winning two World Cups, the Champions Trophy, No. 1 Test status,” Prasad told Sportstar in an exclusive chat.

“Mahi has not announced any retirement plans. The options are wide open and Mahi will take a call. But, no body can question him about his career or contribution to Indian cricket,” he added.

Prasad, however, said it was the selectors’ duty to move on and identify the next generation of players.

While making an appearance at a promotional event last month, Dhoni avoided questions related to his retirement and said, "January tak mat poocho (don't ask me till January)" .

Dhoni had called time on his Test career back in December 2014 while he stepped down as India's limited-overs skipper in January 2017.
