India head coach Ravi Shastri defended Rishabh Pant, who is getting heavy criticism for his debacle with the bat lately. Shastri knows the youngster with lots of potential needs time to shape up well before becoming a huge asset for team India.

Pant rose to fame after his flamboyant innings in the Indian Premier League. He is in limelight since then and fans are expecting to show him the same performance in limited-overs cricket for India.

The fact that fans have got a glimpse of his potential, makes them impatient in international cricket for a high-quality destructive innings.

"Nothing. Just tell him that you are young and nobody expects you to learn everything in one day. You are bound to make mistakes, but as long as you sit down and think about ways to rectify those mistakes, you know that is what this game will teach you," Ravi Shastri told IANS.

Pant struggles to build his innings despite opportunities. He has scored just 229 runs in 10 ODI innings. In T20Is, his average is just 19.88 in 23 innings.

The Delhi batsman will feature in the ODI and T20I series against West Indies.

"You are not going to be a superstar in one day. You will have your ups and your downs. That is life, but the more you work harder, the more the sacrifices you make, the better you will become," added Shastri.
