Veteran England paceman James Anderson is likely to make his Test comeback in the upcoming South Africa series next month after being sidelined from the international scene since August 2019.

Anderson, England's all-time leading wicket-taker, had to leave the field after bowling just four overs in the first Test against Australia before sustaining a calf strain at Edgbaston in August – which ruled him out of the rest of the Ashes series and the ongoing New Zealand tour.

The Lancashire seamer has confirmed that he is "progressing nicely" and he is expected for England’s upcoming tour of South Africa where they will four-Test starting from December 26 at the SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium. They will also play 5 ODIs and 2 T20Is in South Africa as well.

England Cricket Team’s managing director Ashley Giles on Sunday, November 17, confirmed that the 37-year-old will now head to Potchefstroom for a training camp after trained at Manchester City’s home ground, the Etihad Stadium, last month to recover from a calf injury and if he is on the right track and he might be recalled for the South Africa Tests.

As per reports on BBC, Giles said of Anderson: “Jimmy is going out to Potchefstroom. We're hopeful. We think he is on track, which is great. The medical team is happy. The older you get, these things linger longer. We felt no point forcing it for this short tour.”

He signed off by saying, “It will be interesting to see the pitches we play on in South Africa. I think they'll be green, and they'll go for a bowler war and take us on. It's not something I'd take on with Jofra Archer and Jimmy Anderson, but it will be an exciting series.”
