Sourav Ganguly congratulates Abhijit Banerjee for winning Nobel Prize

Ganguly termed Banerjee's achievement as "much bigger".

Newly-elected BCCI President Sourav Ganguly, on Tuesday (October 16), congratulated Kolkata-born Abhijit Banerjee on winning Nobel Prize in Economics while terming his fellow Bangali’s achievement much bigger and terrific than his appointment.

Ganguly, who was recently appointed as President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), called Banerjee a special person and is hoping to meet him one day.

After returning his home town, Ganguly told media: “It’s (Nobel prize) a much bigger and terrific achievement. I have not met him (Banerjee) ever. I was reading about him in the flight and what he did ... It’s on economics related to poverty. He’s a special person. Hopefully, I will meet him someday.”

Former India captain signed off, “From all of us, heartiest congratulations (to Banerjee).”

Noteworthy, Banerjee became the eighth Indian to honored with Nobel Prize after being jointly chosen for the 2019 Nobel Economics Prize along with Esther Duflo, also MIT professor and Harvard University’s Michael Kremer for their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.

Mr. Banerjee’s wife Duflo is the second woman to win the Nobel Prize for Economics and the youngest recipient of the honor.
