Former South Africa batsman Gary Kirsten will meet England and Wales Cricket Board to outline his vision for the men's national team and possibly apply for the head coach position left vacant by Trevor Bayliss.

Kirsten's CV as coach includes overseeing India's surge towards winning the 2011 World Cup and taking the country to No.1 in Test rankings.

The 51-year-old has been reluctant to join a set-up at the international level due to travel demands and time away from home, and has been limited to stints across T20 leagues in the world.

It is learnt, Kirsten went through England's future tour programme before showing interest in the coach's job.

Anyway, the ECB director of cricket Ashley Giles recently confirmed the new head coach will have the option miss some series and freshen up himself up for the marquee events. The move is also aimed to enable further experience of working at this level to the assistant coaches.

If Kirsten becomes England's head coach, his first assignment will be the tour of South Africa in December. Prior to which, he has a previously-agreed commitment with Durban Heat at home in the Mzansi Super League. Kirsten is also involved with a Cardiff-based team in The Hundred.
