Former India off-spinner Ramesh Powar has been appointed as bowling coach of the India men’s ‘A’ team.
According to reports, Powar’s appointment with India ‘A’ is only for touring South Africa ‘A’ side which is scheduled to play two four-day matches and a series of one-day games from August 29 to September 20.
The 41-year-old who has 34 wickets to his name in 31 ODIs turned coach in July 2018. The 41-year-old retired spinner was invited for an elite coaches orientation program, organized by the NCA in Bangalore, and was the coach at the India under-19 boys' camp at Dharamshala.
Ramesh Powar's contract as the head coach of India women's team was extended till the end of the women's World T20 later that year but he did not receive another extension due to publicized fallout with Mithali Raj which led to his ouster.
The former team India skipper Mithali Raj who was left out of the XI for India's semi-final encounter at the World T20, which they lost, returned home and wrote a letter to the BCCI accusing Powar of trying to "destroy" her career. Powar responded to her letter by revealing that Mithali had threatened to retire if she wasn't allowed to open the batting.
Harmanpreet Kaur who was named as the skipper of the Indian team at ICC Women's World Twenty20 along with her deputy Smriti Mandhana wrote separate emails to the BCCI requesting that Powar continue in the job.
But following the rather ugly sequence of events, the BCCI put out an advertisement inviting applications for the job and in the end, WV Raman has since been in charge of the women's team and Powar was appointed as bowling coach for India ‘A’.
