Chepauk Super Gillies (CSG) clinched the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2019 title by defeating Dindigul Dragons (DD) in a closely contested final at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on Thursday (August 15).

The hero of the final without a doubt was CSG pacer G Periyaswamy, who claimed 5 wickets by conceding just 15 runs in his 4 overs.

Periyaswamy, who is known as “India’s Lasith Malinga” for his uncannily similar bowling action to the Sri Lankan great, was given the last over with Dindigul Dragons needing 15 runs to win.

Living up to the expectations, Periyaswamy made the mockery of Dindigul batsmen in the final over with his slingy yorkers. The 25-year-old took three wickets and conceded just two runs in that over to secure a comfortable 12-run victory for the Super Gillies in the end.

Periyaswamy had done a brilliant job in his third over as well, giving away only six runs at a stage when Dindigul required 29 runs to win off 18 balls while chasing the target of 127.

Speaking after the match, Chepauk Super Gillies head coach Hemang Badani said: “He’s (Periyaswamy) come up from a very humble background and it is great to see him doing so well. He was our first pick and he’s had a fantastic season.”

“Periyaswamy was the X factor for us and he delivered when it mattered the most,” said India all-rounder Vijay Shankar, who is a part of Chepauk Super Gillies line-up.

G Periyaswamy, who was adjudged Player-of-the-Match in the final and also bagged the Player-of-the-Series award, said: “It was a great experience. The victory was because of my teammates. My mentality is only to win, even when I was playing tennis-ball cricket. The yorker comes naturally to me.”
