The Global T20 Canada 2019 came to a very exciting end on Sunday (August 11) with a thrilling super-over encounter where Winnipeg Hawks clinched win over defending champions Vancouver Knights in the final at Brampton.
Both teams scored 192 runs in their alloted 20 overs before the super-over separated them towards the title.
Knights made 9 runs off six balls but Hawks went past that in only four deliveries to come out victorious in the summit-clash.
"I am just overwhelmed. We were off to a tremendous start. The pitch was getting slower and lower. We should have got to 200, but 192 was par. We were trying to make him wait (Russell) as long as possible. We held our nerves well. Sana, excellent last over and excellent Super Over," Winnipeg Hawks skipper Rayad Emrit said at the post-match presentation ceremony.
"Sana said he wanted, I had no problem. Happy that he put his hand up and delivered. Nobody backed us to win the final, we believed we could do that. The close wins gave us the extra motivation. It's an excellent tournament, it'll go from strength to strength."
Vancouver Knights captain Shoaib Malik was left disappointed at the outcome as he said: "We fought well despite losing early wickets. We have Iron Man (Russell) in our team, he almost won the game. He told me that he was up for bowling two overs. I was expecting more."
"The opposition were hitting left and right; that's when he offered to bowl two more. Super Overs are always tough. We are professionals, we have a job to do. We were expecting a couple of sixes from Russell, but Sana bowled well. I'd like to congratulate the team that played well. I wish all the best to the organizers."
Shaiman Anwar was awarded "Player-of-the-Match" after his 45-ball 90 outshined an all-round performance from Andre Russell, who scalped 4/29 besides scoring a 20-ball 46 in the run-chase.
JP Duminy received the "Player-of-the-Tournament" award for his immaculate consistency throughout the competition. And he said: "It was a team effort throughout the season. It was an amazing performance from individuals. For me, it's just about enjoying. It's important to share experience with the young guys."
