The 35-year-old Sri Lankan pacer Lasith Malinga is set to call it quits in ODI cricket after the first match of the three-match series against touring Bangladesh.

The right-arm quick was named in the 22-man squad picked to play the 3 ODIs against Bangladesh, but the Sri Lankan skipper Dimuth Karunaratne revealed that the veteran pacer has decided to retire after the first match.

He is going to play the first match. After that he is retiring. That's what he said to me. I don't know what he said for the selectors but for me he said he is playing only one match,” said the 31-year-old left-hand batsman Karunaratne.

Malinga made his debut in ODI format in Rangiri Dambulla stadium against United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2004 edition of Asia Cup. On his ODI debut, Malinga’s figures read 1-39 in his quota of 10 overs.

The right-hand pace bowler born in Galle has 335 wickets to his name in 225 One-Day Internationals with a decent average of 29.02 and a good strike rate of 32.40. Only Muttiah Muralitharan (523) and Chaminda Vaas (399) have taken more wickets than Malinga in ODIs for Sri Lanka.

The fast bowler known for his cheeky smile after being hit for a boundary was a vital part of Sri Lankan bowling attack in the recently concluded ICC Cricket World Cup 2019, held in England.

He was at his best in the encounter against the hosts as he picked up 4-43 in his 10 overs. He took the important wickets of James Vince, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root and Jos Buttler as the Sri Lankan side handed a 20-run loss to Eoin Morgan’s England.

Malinga known for his toe-crushing yorkers retired from Test Cricket in 2011 but still made himself available for other formats of the game.
