Virat Kohli will have absolutely no say in new head coach selection - Reports

Decision has been taken keeping Kohli's rift with Kumble, which led to Kumble resigning early.

Team India’s head coach Ravi Shastri has one final tour with the team before his contract extension expires. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has already started accepting applications for the job and according to a BCCI official, Indian skipper Virat Kohli will not have a say in the selection process.

The decision of not allowing Kohli to have a say is taken keeping in mind the tenure of former Indian cricketer Anil Kumble as head coach. Kumble stepped down from the position after having differences with the captain.

A BCCI official told Indian Express, “Last time, the captain (Kohli) had expressed his difficulty, or the team’s difficulty, with former coach Anil Kumble. In the new selection process, he will have absolutely no say with regards to who becomes the coach. This time, we have Kapil Dev in the coach selection committee, and he will not listen to him (Kohli).

Until now, the head coach had the responsibility or the freedom to choose his support staff. However, this time the head coach and the support staff, both, will be selected by Kapil Dev and his team consisting of Anshuman Gaekwad and Shantha Rangaswamy.

Support staff will be picked by the selection committee. Normally, we allow the head coach to do that (pick the support staff) for team building. This time, if the head coach is selected (before the selection of the support staff), he might join the process,” the official added.

The extension to the contracts of Ravi Shastri, batting coach Sanjay Bangar and bowling coach Bharat Arun will end after India’s Tour of West Indies.
