Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) are reportedly looking to hire India domestic batting stalwart Wasim Jaffer as batting coach for the age-group cricket teams in Bangladesh.
It is being said that the BCB Director and its Games Development Committee Chairman Khaled Mahmud Sujon was really impressed by Jaffer’s batting style during his stint with Abahani Limited in the Dhaka Premier League 2018-2019, and that’s the reason behind his probable appointment to the national side.
However, it is yet to confirm whether the 41-year-old, who played four matches for Abahani and scored 216, would be handed over the responsibility of senior or age-group teams, but the top BCB officials had a conversation with Jaffer in Dhaka earlier this week regarding the same.
While BCB Games Development senior national manager AEM Kawser has admitted that the Board is in talks with Jaffer regarding the same, but decide come to the final decision after holding more talks with the batsman, the right-hander also admitted that BCB has approached him for the same.
AEM Kawser told The Independent, “We talked to him and orally proposed him to be a coach in Bangladesh. Wasim Jaffer also showed his interest. It’s just a preliminary stage. The board will take the final decision after holding more discussion with Wasim Jaffer. The discussion is still at the preliminary stage.”
Meanwhile, Jaffer told Sportstar on Sunday, 31 March, “Yes, they have approached me but it hasn’t materialized yet. I don’t know the role yet. Maybe, they would like to give me a go at the national team because it is easier for (us) to relate to sub-continent players. Foreign people don’t have too much idea about sub-continent conditions. It makes sense to get someone who has played cricket here and can help players on how to get used to the things. Let’s see how things go. It’s still in the pipeline.”
On the other hand, Akram Khan, BCB cricket operations committee chairman stated, “We, at BCB, have had discussions on Jaffer and we are trying to figure out the best role for him. We have the U-19 team, the Bangladesh Cricket Academy, Bangladesh A team and also the senior Test team, so we are still figuring out where he will be most effective. We will soon have a meeting with him.”
Noteworthy, it is being said that BCB wants to initially give him the responsibility of the age-group cricket team and the senior level -may be High Performance (HP) duty with the side.
