ICC gives thumbs up to players sporting names and jersey numbers in Test Cricket

The announcement will be applicable with the beginning of first World Test Championship cycle this year.

International Cricket Council (ICC) has allowed all full member Test-playing nations to have players sport names and numbers on the back of their traditional white jerseys.

Ambitioned towards popularising Test cricket, the idea is directly inspired by English county championship sides as well as Australian domestic Sheffield Shield teams that wear specified names and numbers on the back so as to be easily recognised among the game's followers.

It is also confirmed that this new move will come into being with the beginning of Test Championship after the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.

"Yes, it starts from August 1 for the World Test Championship," Claire Furlong, ICC's GM Manager (Strategic Communications) told PTI on Friday, March 22. "It is a part of the wider plan to promote Test cricket."

That basically means Indian skipper Virat Kohli will be seen wearing No.18 in the Caribbean, where India kickstart their World Test Championship campaign with a two-match series versus the West Indies in July-August.

Quite interestingly, the decision to introduce Test shirts with names and numbers seems to have been taken last week as former England captain Michael Vaughan indicated via a Tweet from his official account.

"Delighted to hear Names & Numbers will potentially be on Test playing shirts .. About time .. Add a bit of colour as well .. make the Shirts more inviting for Kids to want to wear .. Test cricket has to become more commercial .. CUE .. A lot of abuse !!!," Vaughan had posted on March 19.
