South Africa’s Aiden Markram and Farhaan Behardien have entered into the record books following their record-breaking partnership for the Titans in a Momentum One-Day Cup 2019 match against the Cape Cobras at the Newlands on Friday (1st March).
Markram and Behardien, who last played for SA against India last year, stitched a List A record 272 run sixth-wicket partnership in 50-over Proteas tournament to overtake the previous sixth-wicket best of 267 set by Grant Elliott and Luke Ronchi for New Zealand against Sri Lanka in 2015.
With their incredible show at the Newlands, Markram, who hit 15 fours and seven sixes in his 3rd 150+ score (169) in the One-Day Cup and Behardien, who finished with an unbeaten 111 off 100 balls, gave a timely reminder to South Africa before their squad selection for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup.
However, South Africa’s upcoming five-match ODI series against Sri Lanka will be their last series before they open their World Cup campaign against England at The Oval on May 30.
Meanwhile, the duo came to rescue the Titans when they were in deep trouble at 31/5 by 13th over after losing the toss and added the highest score for the 6th wicket in List A cricket to help the side win the ODI match by 83 runs against the Cobras on Friday.
Markram, who last played an ODI match for South Africa in November 2018 against Australia, was a surprise omission from the South Africa squad for Sri Lanka ODIs and if continues with his dominating form in the Momentum Cup he could be called up to the side for the home series.
Noteworthy, Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels’ 372 for the West Indies against Zimbabwe in the World Cup 2015 is still the record partnership for any wicket in List A and ODI cricket.
