Pakistan should face cricket apartheid on terror issue, says CoA chief Vinod Rai

Rai urged the ICC and other nations to isolate Pakistan like the way South Africa was ostracised by the world for apartheid.

Committee of Administrators (CoA) chairman Vinod Rai has said that the BCCI is working to join the government's efforts to isolate Pakistan the way South Africa was banned by world cricket for Apartheid in the 1970s.

The Supreme Court-appointed committee and BCCI officials met in New Delhi on Friday (February 22) but they did not take any stance on Indo-Pak World Cup clash in Manchester on June 16.

While Rai said that they will consult with the government before taking any call, he also confirmed that the BCCI CEO Rahul Johri has written a letter to the ICC, asking the cricketing community to break ties with the “nations from where terror emanates”.

"Why should we shoot ourselves in the foot by not playing? We should seek their (Pakistan) ouster and remove them from the cricketing committee. I look at it (the letter sent to the ICC) from the point of view that we are able to isolate Pakistan. Make it a cricket apartheid for Pakistan on the terror issue. The idea is to work hand in hand with the Indian government to isolate Pakistan in the cricketing community," Rai quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

"The present dispensation feels strongly about it because we reflect the sentiment of the nation. We are not a closed cricket community, we represent the nation," he added.

In the wake of the Pulwama terrorist attack, there has been plenty of statement doing rounds regarding the World Cup 2019 match between India and Pakistan.

The call to boycott the match has come from some such as veteran spinner Harbhajan Singh and former captains Mohammed Azharuddin and Sourav Ganguly

But offering a different view, batting legends Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar have stated that India should not hand over two points to Pakistan by forfeiting the match. They, however, advocated continued shunning of bilateral cricket ties.
