Steve Waugh stresses on experience ahead of the World Cup

Former Australia skipper Steve Waugh has said that he expects experience to come to the fore and eventually triumph in next year's ICC Cricket World Cup in England and believes that a team with the most exceptionally skilled players will be able to clinch the trophy at the marquee event.

Waugh, the last captain to win an ODI World Cup on English shores, believes that those pitches – particularly in the early northern summer when next year’s World Cup will be staged - are going to be tough to encounter and teams will have to be technically correct to counter them.

"I wanted experienced players in England(back then in 1999) because it’s more of a genuine cricket match," Waugh was quoted telling cricket.com.au, "And what I’m saying there is that the bowlers come into play a lot more in England, so I wanted guys like (experienced all-rounder) Tom Moody and (seamer) Paul Reiffel in the squad."

"You need a bit more experience in England conditions I think - unless the game has changed in the last 20 years, which it probably has," he stressed and continued, "But I still think a really good cricket team will win in England, more so than necessarily the best one-day side. I think you need really good players in those conditions, in England."

Having just lost the ODI series against South Africa 2-1, captain Aaron Finch was heard questioning whether the brand of cricket that Australia are currently employing is contemporary enough or not?

Comparing it with England and India, the no.1 and no.2 ranked ODI sides in the world, Finch had said, "(It’s) a fairly one-dimensional side in terms of attack, versus workers of the ball and your traditional batsmen," before emphasizing, "We have to either adapt our game plan a little bit around the way the side is structured best, or we slightly change our personnel to fit a style we think can win."

When asked to comment on the current state of Australian limited overs game and how it is building towards that mega competition, Waugh dwelled, "Aaron Finch looks like he’s a good leader, he’s played good short-form cricket so he’s probably the obvious choice," and added, "And I think now you’ve got to settle on captain now for the next World Cup. Whoever they pick has got to be given the right to (be told) ‘we’re going with you right through to the next World Cup’."

"You’ve got to have time to prepare, and he’s got to have time to mould the team that he wants because there’s not that long. "There are not many games, so it’s getting to the pointy end already," he signed off.
