India A captain Shreyas Iyer has claimed on Monday (13 August) that the added responsibility of captaincy changed his character and attitude towards the game and gets the best out of him.

Whenever the Mumbai batsman gets the opportunity to lead the side whether be it in the Indian Premier League (Delhi Daredevils), domestic tournaments or India A, Iyer is always leading the side from the front with his captaincy and batting skills.

Recently, Iyer led India A against South Africa A at home in the unofficial Tests having successfully won the first Test and drew the second. Iyer also led Delhi Daredevils in the IPL 2018 after Gautam Gambhir stepped down as captain after the first six matches. He is also one of the most successful batsmen in the Mumbai side.

As per reports in SportStar Live, Iyer said after the second Test ended in a draw at the Platinum Oval, “Whenever I get this role, my character and attitude totally change towards the game. Whenever the pressure comes, I see to it so that I get the best out of myself. Captaincy totally changes your approach.”

The 23-year-old respected for his work ethics and leadership abilities, said, “I really love it. You have that power to do whatever you want on the field. When you give opportunities to players to do something, they really appreciate it. You should not misuse power but use it precisely. I have been doing that well. When you are leading a side, you get a lot of respect outside as well. But you have to respect everyone too. It is good to see when people come and talk to you.”

Iyer signed off by saying, “When you go upstage, you face good bowlers. The performances keep fluctuating every time as you are not constant in one place. It is important to keep your mind in one direction.”
