Shardul Thakur woe no.10 jersey on his debut, the same number Sachin used to wear
India and Mumbai pacer Shardul Thakur has been chosen in the ODI squad against New Zealand, but was left out of the 1st ODI, which was played at his home ground of Mumbai.Shardul had courted controversy, when he decided to opt for no.10 on his jersey when he made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka some time back. The no.10 jersey is synonymous with Indian batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who played his entire limited overs career with this number on his back.

Shardul was widely criticized by fans on social media for wearing the same number on his jersey on his debut and fans also asked BCCI to retire the jersey number, so no one else could use Sachin Tendulkar’s iconic no.10 jersey. Shardul had explained that he had worn the no.10 jersey for numerological reasons, but was slammed for showing disrespect to Sachin Tendulkar.
Now Shardul has opted for no.54 on his jersey and was seen practicing wearing the jersey with the new number before the start of the 1st ODI. It is left to be seen whether he changed the number on his own, or was wisely advised to do so.
India however, lost the first ODI after Trent Boult (4/35) and Tom Latham (103*) sank India, after Virat Kohli’s masterful 121 in his 200th ODI.
