A decade ago, today, Yuvraj Singh wrote his name in history books by hitting six sixes in an over against England during the India vs England World T20 match at Durban in 2007.

India had come into this World T20 2007, the first World Cup of the then new T20 format as dark horses, having played just 1 T20 before the whole tournament. Many of the senior players like Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Anil Kumble and Rahul Dravid excused themselves from the tournament and a new leader in MS Dhoni was crowned for the World Cup.

Dhoni took India to the World cup glory, which was India’s second World Cup win after 1983 Prudential World Cup win at Lord’s. Yuvraj Singh made the World Cup a memorable one thanks to his two brilliant innings- one against England and another against Australia in semis.

However, in an interview with the Mirror, Yuvraj admitted that on that night, he never intended to hit six sixes.

“My father never wanted me to hit the ball in the air and always wanted me to play down the ground. I had no plans to hit six sixes, I was lucky all the balls were (in my) area and I was able to connect,” Yuvi said.

“We were a young and fearless team going and expressing ourselves and we had no big names so people had no big expectations from us. But we did well and won the tournament.”, he added.

The precursor to that was the tiff between Andrew Flintoff and Yuvraj Singh, who had been batting wonderfully against English bowlers on that night. The tiff incensed Yuvraj enough, that poor Stuart Broad bore the brunt of Yuvraj’s anger, as he smoked six sixes off his six balls.

Yuvraj also scored the fastest half century in international and T20I cricket in just 12 balls and put India on path of victory. Yuvraj admitted that having Dhoni at the other end helped him, “Swing as hard as you can. More than the verbal argument what got me going was the sheer focus. The level of concentration was so intense that everything else pretty much zoned out.”
