Former India spinner Amit Mishra revealed an interesting story about having an angry altercation with current India head coach Gautam Gambhir during a domestic game. Notably, Amit Mishra was recently appointed as the spin bowling coach of the Delhi Capitals (DC) franchise ahead of IPL 2027.
Interestingly, both Gambhir and Mishra made their India ODI debuts in 2003 in the same tri-series in Bangladesh in the TVS Cup. Gambhir’s debut came against Bangladesh, while Mishra played his first ODI against South Africa. The duo also played for India across formats.
Meanwhile, Mishra described how, during a domestic match, he got into a brawl with Gautam Gambhir. Gambhir and Mishra got into a furious argument and spoke to each other.
"There was a game between Delhi and Haryana. I got one player out. Before that, he played a cross shot, and Gautam was batting at the other end. We spoke a bit in between, and I told him to be quiet. I asked him, "What is your problem if I am getting a few wickets?" He told me to shut up and bowl. I got angry, and we exchanged words," Mishra said on a podcast with Aakash Chopra.
Mishra further recalled that Gambhir reached out to him after the game and invited him for dinner. Mishra, still miffed by the incident, was angry and declined his invitation. But Gambhir asked him to forget what happened and asked him to come for a coffee.
"After the match was over, we went to the hotel, and I went to eat. Gambhir called me and asked what I was doing. I told him nothing. He asked to go for dinner. I was like, "You were fighting just a while back. "I was also angry, so I told him I had already eaten. He then told me not to get angry and said Let's go for cold coffee," he added.
Amit Mishra then went on to state that Gautam Gambhir was a completely different person from what people perceived him to be by his on-field nature.
"So, he is like that on the ground, but if you are his friend, he will come to you later. People think he is like that, but it is actually not like that,” Mishra added.
Amit Mishra also mentioned one aspect about Gautam Gambhir that he found particularly appealing in the same podcast. He claimed that although Gambhir came from a wealthy family, he never flaunted himself or made others feel inferior.
"Gautam had one good thing in him. He never showed that he was from a well-to-do family. That is why he is my friend. My first car was an Alto, and he sat in it with me. He used to have a BMW, but he would come with me in my Alto for practice. He never let me or anyone feel that he was from a well-to-do family," he said.
Mishra and Gambhir played together for Delhi Daredevils (now Capitals) in the formative seasons of the Indian Premier League.
