Ayush Mhatre, a star for the Mumbai and Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and captain of India’s U19 World Cup-winning team, recently returned to cricket after a long rehabilitation from a left hamstring injury, but he is now set to be sidelined for an extended period after right hamstring surgery.
Notably, Ayush Mhatre tore his left hamstring during the IPL 2026 tournament and spent three months in rehab and recovery at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru.
He made his return to competitive cricket in Mumbai's Ranji Trophy season opener against Chandigarh in Mumbai on October 11. He was also named the vice-captain of the Mumbai side for the Ranji Trophy.
However, Mhatre suffered a Grade 4 tear in his right hamstring while running between the wickets on day one of the game. He then underwent surgery on his right hamstring at the Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai.
“Ayush Mhatre underwent right hamstring surgery yesterday (on Thursday) at the Kokilaben Hospital in Mumbai, performed by Dr Dinshaw Pardiwala,” a BCCI source told PTI.
The source further stated that it would take 2-3 months for Mhatre to make a full recovery and play competitive cricket again.
“He is currently recovering well and is expected to take approximately 2-3 months to make a full recovery and return to competitive cricket. The surgery was successful, and as of Friday morning, Ayush had even started walking slowly with crutches," the source added.
Mumbai had to search for a second opening pair in as many Ranji Trophy games this season due to Mhatre's injury.
In Mumbai's away match against Himachal Pradesh, Angkrish Raghuvanshi and Divyaansh Saxena opened the innings, whereas Mhatre had begun with Yashasvi Jaiswal against Chandigarh. Jaiswal had to leave for India A duties in New Zealand.
