The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Saturday (October 17) unveiled a six-member commentary panel for the upcoming men’s ODI tri-series featuring Pakistan, England and Sri Lanka, slated to run from October 18 to 31 in Rawalpindi and Lahore.
The omission of former England captains Michael Atherton and Nasser Hussain from the commentary team caught everyone’s attention and became a topic of debate. Both pundits appeared in the commentary box when England last toured Pakistan in October 2024 for a three-match Test series.
Atherton and Hussain’s snub follows an intense off-field row between the PCB and Sky Sports in August 2026. During the lunch interval of the Lord's Test match, Atherton conducted an 18-minute interview with former Pakistan Prime Minister and cricket legend Imran Khan's sons, Kasim and Sulaiman, who raised severe humanitarian concerns regarding their jailed father's isolation and deteriorating health.
The PCB strongly objected to the political nature of the broadcast, went as far as threatening a player walkout to protest its broadcast, and filed a formal complaint. While Pakistan's state broadcaster, PTV Sports, completely censored the interview, Sky Sports proceeded to air it.
Atherton later defended the segment on a podcast with Hussain, accusing the Pakistani authorities of trying to "airbrush Imran almost out of existence".
Although no official reason was given by the PCB for their absence from the commentary panel, the exclusion is widely viewed across cricket circles as a direct fallout of this controversy.
The final six-member commentary panel for the ODI tri-series consists of former Pakistan internationals Waqar Younis, Aamir Sohail, Bazid Khan, and Urooj Mumtaz, alongside Sri Lanka's Roshan Abeysinghe and England's Mark Butcher. Well-known sports journalist Zainab Abbas will serve as the presenter for the tournament.
The series will get underway on Sunday (October 18), with Pakistan taking on Sri Lanka in the opening fixture in Rawalpindi. The hosts will then face England in Rawalpindi on October 22.
England and Sri Lanka will square off at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on October 22 before the competition moves to Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium for the remaining three league-stage matches on October 25, 27 and 29.
The Gaddafi Stadium will also stage the title clash on October 31, with the top two teams in the league standings making it to the final.
