India’s T20 World Cup-winning skipper Suryakumar Yadav returned to competitive action on Sunday (October 11). Playing in the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) organized President’s Cup, he represented the MIG Cricket Club.

Ahead of their T20 fixture against the Muslim United Sports Club, Surya was officially named the captain of the side and was handed his maiden MIG cap. He turned to the local club route to gain valuable match practice after missing out on Mumbai's squad for the Ranji Trophy 2026-27 season opener.

Despite making himself fully available for selection, Suryakumar was left out of Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad because he had not played red-ball cricket since February 2025 and skipped pre-season training camps.

The selectors opted to pick players with more recent red-ball game time. To find rhythm and work on his batting form, Yadav decided to immediately grind it out in local club cricket.

Batting in his first competitive outing for the club, the former India T20I captain was dismissed for 17 runs off 10 balls.

Suryakumar Yadav may have failed to score big, but he marked his return to competitive cricket by captaining the MIG Cricket Club to a five-wicket victory against Muslim United Sports Club.

Despite leading India to T20 World Cup title earlier this year, Suryakumar was dropped from the national team following an extended dip in form.

Surya couldn’t score a T20I half-century last year, and also failed to leave a mark against the top-ranked teams during India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign. The 36-year-old carried his poor form into the IPL 2026, where he scored 270 runs in 13 innings at a low average of 20.77 for the Mumbai Indians (MI).

As a result, Suryakumar didn’t only lose T20I captaincy to Shreyas Iyer but was completely sidelined from the setup.
