Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel has reiterated the story of recommending a young Jasprit Bumrah to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) management ahead of the IPL 2014 mega auction.
Patel was captaining Gujarat in the domestic circuit at the time, where he saw Bumrah's unique action and immense talent firsthand in the Ranji Trophy.
“I had recommended Jasprit Bumrah for RCB in 2014 mega auction. I was picked first day around the lunch time for RCB. When I received the message, I said that this is player (Bumrah), you guys see it,” Parthiv said on Aakash Chopra's Baith & Bol podcast.
Parthiv first shared the anecdote during an interview in 2020, revealing that his suggestion was completely ignored by then RCB skipper Virat Kohli, who had said: "Chhor na yaar. Yeh Bumrah-Vumrah kya karenge? (Leave it. What will such players do?)".
However, in his recent interview, Parthiv accepted his mistake, saying that his way of presenting the story was wrong because Kohli’s response was not like that.
“The manner in which I had described the entire episode, perhaps it was wrong because the reply was not as such. Yaar yeh Bumrah-Vumrah kya karenge – this is something I quoted in a broadcast and I should have elaborated it in a better way and shouldn’t have spoken like that,” Parthiv added.
“They (RCB management) didn’t feel that Bumrah could do wonders at that time. That is okay,” he further remarked.
After facing social media backlash from the Virat Kohli fans for narrating this story, Parthiv Patel posted on X "Neem patta aur sach dono kadwa hai (Neem leaf and truth both are bitter)" in 2022. But his cryptic message backfired as he was subjected to further trolling and abuse on social media.
RCB ignored Parthiv’s advice and did not bid for Bumrah, who was retained by the Mumbai Indians (MI)—where he eventually developed into one of the world's premier fast bowlers and a multi-time IPL winner.
