The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Monday (October 5) confirmed the appointment of opening batter Sahibzada Farhan as the country's new men’s T20I captain.
He steps into the role to replace Salman Ali Agha, who has been stripped of the captaincy and entirely dropped from the T20I squad following a string of disappointing results, including underwhelming campaigns in the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup.
Farhan earned the selectors' trust after successfully leading a young Pakistan side to a silver medal at the recently concluded 2026 Asian Games in Japan. He is currently ranked among the top T20I batters globally.
His first assignment as full-time skipper will be the three-match home T20I series against Sri Lanka, slated to be held in Rawalpindi from October 9 to October 13.
Alongside Agha's exclusion, other notable senior players like Babar Azam, Shaheen Shah Afridi, and Haris Rauf have also been left out of the T20I squad. Moreover, wicketkeeper-batter Usman Khan has been axed from the T20I roster following his dismal show behind the stumps in the Asian Games final against India.
Shaheen might have been sidelined from the T20I setup, but he'll continue to lead the team in ODIs. Babar and Rauf have also been named in the ODI squad for the subsequent tri-series against England and Sri Lanka.
Following the T20I series, Pakistan will feature in a seven-match ODI tri-series alongside England and Sri Lanka. Rawalpindi will host the opening three matches, before the tournament moves to Lahore for the remaining league matches and the final.
The tri-series, scheduled to take place from October 18 to October 31, is a key part of the preparation for the three teams ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. The first three league matches will be held at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, while the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore will stage the remaining three league fixtures and the final.
